Michael Scheunemann 5 proves with their debut album that intelligent arrangements by no means have to sound “intellectual”. Variety and contrast provide the key ingredients for compositions that are as fresh, powerful, and unpretentious as if they had occurred to the musicians on the day of the recording.

The
cheerful and encouraging interaction of the five skilled protagonists of
improvised music prevents them from following predictable and computable paths.
The
tales, told in 9 originals from Scheunemann and in the interpretations of Tom
Harrells “Angela” and Woody Shaws “Katrina Ballerina”, sound clear and
convincing. Despite the awareness of tradition, they give evidence of an
independent and stable individuality.

The Berlin-born artist has a refined sense of melody and harmony. Already on his latest release, Light Blue, you can get a sense of his vast reservoir of improvisational ideas which he turns into clean-cut alto and soprano sounds.
